Where we learn how the dice are integrated into the game of Nilgiri the Forgotten World.
We will mostly talk about the 20 sided dice since it is most common. However, there are dice with many more or fewer sides that can be employed with the same basic principles outlined here.
The 20 sided dice, or simply called the d20, used in almost all decision making. A very basic way the 20 sided dice is used is to determine an event. The event can be hitting someone, touching someone, or random things like a rock falling out of the sky upon someone.
Typically the success of an event is dependent on rolling a 20 on a 20 sided dice. The table for that would look something like this:
Of course something like this seems hardly fair. All things are not simply a one-in-twenty chance an event will succeed. So modifiers are added to the roll. A modifier can go either way and add or substract from the d20 roll in or against a players favor.
If a player has +5 modifier to an action then his roll would be modified by adding 5. Thus a 15 or more on a d20 would be required in order to succeed in that action.
Any value that amounts to over 20 or under 1 is ignored and capped at 20 and 1 respectively.
Many times the action can be determined by the natural roll. This means that if on the roll of a d20 and an unmodified natural roll of 20 comes up then despite any modifiers, the action is taken. Conversely, if an unmodified natural roll of 1 occurs then despite any modifiers, the action fails.
Sometimes special action besides the standard or failure is given. A natural roll of 1 may cause the player to fumble the action and hurt himself. A natural roll of 20 may cause the player to critically succeed his action.
A total value of the roll plus the modifier above 20 or below 1 does not necessarily require any special action unless the dice naturally rolled a 20 or a 1.
The game has several different modifiers applied to different situations. Here are the major modifiers.
